2011 Banquet and Talent Show

Sudbury Valley League Tennis, Week of July 18

The girls team played a great match against Sudbury Swim and Tennis. It was so hot out that all the matches were shortened by two games. At first singles Brownyn Davies played great but lost 2-8 to a girl with an extremely fast serve. At second singles Stefi Geiger played a very close match and was able to pull it out in the end with a score of 8-6. At third singles Abi Betancourt played a great match but lost 2-8. The first doubles team of Marissa Levee and Emily Irving played a great match and won 10-8. At second doubles the dynamic duo of Nina and Emma Blahut played very well and won 10-2. We also scheduled an additonal singles match, and Anna Downs got to play in her first ever match.  ~ Mike Perkins, Girls Coach

The Wayland boys suffered another tough 5-0 loss at the hands of Sudbury Swim and Tennis this past Thursday. The singles matches (Will Barton, Gage Fuller and Jack Schwartz) were all close contests, despite what the game score may indicate. Each of the matches, the closest a 6-8 loss, saw frequent deuces but the Wayland boys struggled to close out the games in the searing heat. The doubles teams of Jack Fletcher/Evan Chinman and Eric Greene/Nick Smith had even more trouble fending off their Sudbury counterparts, losing 2-10 and 0-10 respectively. As expected, the veteran team of Fletcher and Chinman, played well together but the pleasant surprise was the enthusiasm of Greene and Smith. The pair played together for the first time and despite the lop-sided loss, both gained valuable doubles experience that will prove useful in their future matches.  ~ Robby Barnes, Boys Coach

Sudbury Valley League Tennis Match Update, week of July 11, 2011

Boys Team:

The week of July 11th was a tough one for the boys of Wayland Swim and Tennis, dropping a 5-0 match to Longwood followed by another close loss to Longfellow. Apparently unfazed by the change from their usual grass surface to clay, the much older Longwood team marched nearly unimpeded through the Wayland lineup. That said, the experience gained from playing the talented competitors only benefited Wayland as they prepared for the coming match with Longfellow. While Longfellow ended up sneaking by with a 3-2 win, Wayland's two points were the result of outstanding play in second singles and doubles. Will Barton took a commanding early lead and held on for a 10-0 romp while Jacks Schwartz and Fletcher mounted a thrilling comeback to win 12-7. After two tough losses it can be a challenge to find a silver lining but with two of the toughest teams in the schedule now in the past, hopefully the Wayland boys can distill valuable lessons from the unpleasant losses.  ~ Robby Barnes, Boys Head Coach, Elan Wong, Boys Assistant Coach

Girls Team:
The girls team got to travel to Longwood today. They all got to play on the grass courts without their shoes, which was a first for most of them. Longwood as always was a very tough opponent, but everyone had fun playing on a new surface. At first singles TT played a tough match but lost 3-8. At second singles Alessia played great and also lost by a score of 3-8. Lauren played first third singles and won 8-4. Stefi played fourth singles, and won a very exciting match 9-7. At first doubles Emma and Brownyn lost 3-8. At second doubles Nina and Abby played well and lost by a score of you guessed it, 3-8. Everyone had a blast and they didn't want to leave the grass.  ~ Mike Perkins, Girls Head Coach

Sudbury Valley League Match results from week 2

Tuesday:

Boys:
The boys team bounced back in style from their recent loss with a 3-2 victory over Sudbury Swim and Tennis. Will Barton and Gage Fuller, at 1st and 2nd singles respectively, only surrendered a combined six games in fast-paced matches that gave Wayland an early lead. Leighton Gray did his best to fend off a player three years his senior at the third singles spot but eventually fell 9-11. Wayland went on to split the doubles matches and clinched the win with the help of a decisive 12-6 victory at 2nd dubs by Bobby Murray and Aaron Goldstein. Despite their shared names, Jacks Fletcher and Schwartz were unable to match the uniformity of their sibling opponents across the net at the 1st doubles flight. Team Jack eventually fell in a close match, though they will surely play together again. ~ Robby Barnes, Coach

Girls:
The girls team played a great match on Tuesday. The match was away at Sudbury Swim and Tennis club. Everyone played very well, despite the very hot weather. They won all four of their matches, and lost the last one due to not having enough girls to play. At first singles Amanda won the shortest match of the day with a score of 10-1. At second singles Grace also won, with a score of 10-6. Alessia played third singles, and beat a much older girl 10-4. Our only doubles team of Stefi and Emily also won, with a score of 12-2. ` Mike Perkins, Coach

Thursday:

Boys:
The Wayland boys mixed up their usual lineup on Thursday with enormous success while earning a 5-0 sweep of Needham Pool and Racquet. In an impressive display of dominance across the board, the team's combined game score amounted to a heavily lop-sided tally of 54 to 11. It began with smooth sailing for Gage Fuller who won 10-5 at the 1st singles flight. With a win secured at the top of the lineup the rest of the boys followed suit with quick victories over their opponents. Will Barton evidently forgot that he was suffering from nagging hand pain and cruised to an impossibly speedy 10-1 victory at the 2nd singles spot. In a classic case of score-envy, Jack Schwartz floored his opponent with a speedy 10-1 victory as well. Despite rearranging the pairs, the doubles scores tell the same story. Aaron Goldstein and Matt Alexander dealt a 12-1 trouncing at the 1st flight in the league debut for Alexander. Similarly, league veterans Jack Fletcher and Leighton Gray surrendered only a single game in their first match as a tandem. ~ Robby Barnes, Coach

Girls:
Today the girls played a very strong Needham Raquet Club team. At first singles Amanda won decisively with a score of 10-2. Alessia played second singles, and lost 5-10 after being tied 5-5. Grace played third singles and won 10-4. Stefi and Lauren played first doubles against a pair of twins and won a very close match, 13-12 in a tiebreaker. Emily and Nicole played second doubles and won 12-3. The girls team is continuing on its very strong season. ~ Mike Perkins, Coach

Tennis Match Highlights, June 30, 2011

Boys v. Weston 6/30/11:

WSTC 1 – Weston 4

Though the boys team lost 1-3, the numbers don't tell the whole story. The highlight of the day came from Leighton Gray who won a scrappy second singles flight where consistency prevailed 10-8. Gage Fuller, though unable to hold on to win, just barely lost a hard-fought extra-innings battle against an opponent several years older and several feet taller. Jack Fletcher and Bobby Murray utilized aggressive net play to keep their match close despite having never before played together. At the second doubles flight Nick Smith and Jack Butts put up a tough fight while making their first appearance in what we hope will be many more league matches.   ~ Robby Barnes, Boys Coach

Girls v. Weston  6/30/11:

WSTC 3, Weston 2

The Girls hosted Weston Golf for their first match of the season with Becca, Steffi and Allessia dominating in their singles matches.  Both Doubles matches: Abby/Nina and Paige/Emma were very close but Weston came out ahead…  WSTC 3 – Weston Golf 2   ~ Emma Barton, Girls Coach

Tennis Update, Week #5

Another great week of tennis we had this week despite this afternoons rain.

Since this afternoon’s Parent/Child Round Robin had to be cancelled due to rain, we have offered the participants to come tomorrow morning and have the adults join in with this group and have the kids join into the Junior Round Robin.  we also have 4 junior instructors on staff tomorrow who also may join in to add to the excitement.

The rain is coming down hard right now but expected to end overnight.  We plan to arrive between 9 and 9:30 to begin drying the courts and we are hopeful to get the ball rolling (no pun intended) by 10AM…  If anyone wants to come down early and lend a hand we will not turn you away.

As I continue to edit photos from this week, I have started a new Week 5 Gallery.  (this is a private gallery so you need the link below to see it) (keep checking back as I still have lots of photos to add)

I am also still in the process of sorting though our clinic lists for next week.  I am happy to accommodate any last minute additions but need to let  my staff know as early as possible if they will be needed.  The number of kids in the program dictate the number of instructors needed per day so please let me know as soon as possible if you want to participate and have not already registered for this Week #6.    We will also extend out discounted rate for any participate to add a second clinic during out  2:30-4:00 time for only an additional $50 per week (a $25 savings)  (We would like to use that time for more advanced players to work on singles and doubles tactics – match play) but will accommodate any kid that wants to play more tennis.

On that same note, Please keep your account up to date.  I’m sure you understand the bookkeeping on my end is not an easy task and it makes things much easier if you submit payment at the beginning of a week as we do not want to turn a child away.  Please send or bring me a check if you still owe me money for this past week.   If you are uncertain if your account is up to date, please email me and I will let you know.

Reminder:  Please have your child bring a water bottle with them to court.  we are trying to be as green as possible and not use paper cups if we don’t have to.  we will make sure the coolers have clean cold water for refills.

Thanks and hope to see many of you tomorrow morning.

~ Didi and her awesome staff

Tennis Court Reservations

There are now court reservations sheets which will be available on a clipboard at the Table entering the pool area.

Click here to see what the form looks like so you will know what to look for if you want to reserve a court. Courts can be reserved 24 hours ahead of time. The sheets will note when Club programs are running and reservations cannot be made. But if someone wants to come and play and a court is available, that is fine.
